Distributed architectures promise horizontal scalability and fault tolerance, but they introduce tricky failure modes. When network partitions occur, the CAP theorem reminds us that choices must be made.
Understanding Eventual Consistency
In an eventual consistency model, data replicas may temporarily disagree, but given enough time without new updates, all replicas converge to identical states.
Key Tenets
- Idempotency: Every state-mutating message must be safely repeatable.
- Outbox Pattern: Avoid dual-write race conditions by writing business data and events in a single transactional unit.
- Dead-Letter Handling: Quarantine poison pills before they consume queue capacity.
interface DomainEvent<T> { id: string; aggregateId: string; payload: T; timestamp: number; }
Graceful Degradation
Always design failure boundaries. If a recommendation service fails, degrade to static fallbacks instead of crashing the checkout funnel.
